Breaking News--IBM-Sybase Unveil Linux Deal

At a gala gathering of 250 customers at a private event at the New York
Stock Exchange today, Sybase and IBM announced that IBM has chosen the
Sybase Adaptive Server Enterprise for Linux, the enterprise-class,
relational database management system, to run on IBM's eServer OpenPower
systems, the first IBM Power-based servers designed and tuned specifically
for Linux environments. According to IBM, Power is the lowest cost
platform of Linux and, according to Sybase officials, ASE is the lowest
cost commercial Linux database solution. "This announcement changes the
paradigm," David Jacobson, Sybase's senior director of database marketing
and tools, told 5 Minute Briefing in an exclusive interview prior to the
announcement.

According to Jacobson, IBM made a substantial investment in Sybase to port
its database technology to Power. In addition to the co-development, the
companies will co-market, co-sell and co-support the offering. "We are
agnostic when it comes to hardware and the pSeries is generally agnostic
when it comes to databases," Jacobson said.

Financial institutions, Jacobson observed, are using Linux both to run
their trading systems as well as their back-office data centers. While the
financial sector is the first target market, overall Jacobson believes
that the Sybase-Power-Linux combination can address a $3 billion market,
with database sales representing perhaps $500 million. "You will see
additional announcements throughout the year," he said.

"The Linux market itself, he added, is tripling annually. "We are
