Article-ID: <Note:233489.1> Circulation: PUBLISHED (EXTERNAL) Folder: server.Install.InstallationConfiguration Topic: Unix Generic Alerts Title: ALERT: "Interim inventory exception" When Applying Interim Patches to 9.2.0.3 Database Document-Type: ALERT Impact: HIGH Skill-Level: NOVICE Server-Version: 09.02.00.03 Updated-Date: 02-APR-2003 09:42:52 Authors: HAKASHI.JP Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN Keywords: OPATCH; ALERTINFO; Products: 5/RDBMS (9.2.0.3 to 9.2.0.3); Platforms: GENERIC; "Interim inventory exception" When Applying Interim Patches to 9.2.0.3 Database ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Versions Affected ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ This problem occurs only when Oracle Server 9.2.0.2 software is upgraded to release 9.2.0.3. Platforms Affected ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ GENERIC Description ~~~~~~~~~~~ You receive an "Interim inventory exception" when applying interim patches to release 9.2.0.3. The patch is actually applied, however it is not recorded in the inventory. Since it is not recorded, the Conflict Checking feature of opatch will be disabled, meaning, if additional interim patches are applied, they could override a patch already applied. Likelihood of Occurrence ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The problem occurs when all of the following conditions are true: o You have applied patchset release 9.2.0.3 on top of patchset release 9.2.0.2. o You apply an interim patch. The problem will not occur if patchset release 9.2.0.3 was applied on top of patchset release 9.2.0.1. Possible Symptoms ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ opatch displays the following errors: ./opatch.pl version: 1.0.0.0.14 Copyright (c) 2001,2002 Oracle Corporation. All Rights Reserved. Problems were found when trying to update the inventory. The patching process has not finished removing working files. Please investigate the errors. Errors reported were: Interim inventory update exception: The base component <oracle.rdbms, 9.2.0.2.0> of the Oneoff Patch <9.2.0.2.0> is not present in the install inventory. Solution ~~~~~~~~ Before applying any interim patches, select one of the following solutions: 1) Download and install OUI 2.2.0.18.0 from MetaLink. a. Click on the Patches button. b. Click on the "New Metalink Patch Search" . If you are not on the "Simple Search" screen, click on the "Simple Search" button. c. Input the patch number 2878462 on the "Search by Patch Number" box. d. Click Go. e. Select the appropriate platform (if your platform is not listed, it will be soon). f. Click Download. g. Follow the installation instructions on the README. h) Apply 9.2.0.3 interim patches. 2) De-install and re-install software a) De-install the current software. b) Install 9.2.0.1 database from installation media. c) Apply patchset release 9.2.0.3. d) Apply 9.2.0.3 interim patches. If patchset release 9.2.0.2 is not installed, the problem does not occur. Workaround ~~~~~~~~~~ The following workaround should only be done in a very high severity condition, if, for some reason, the solution presented above is not possible. This is because the ORACLE_HOME and Oracle Inventory will become unsynchronized: 1) Verify there are no conflicting objects. Apply interim patches and keep careful track of what was applied and the sequence that they were applied in. Do the following to manually check for conflicts: a) Find the objects that will be patched. $ cd <directory containing the patch> $ grep object_name etc/config/actions These commands display the object(s) being updated. Look for files ending with *.o b) Verify no prior patches replaced any of the objects being patched. Issue the following command against every *.o file. $ find $ORACLE_HOME/.patch_storage -name "*.log" -exec grep -il <*.o filename> {}\; For example: $ cd /home/beta/bug2431450/2860788 $ grep object_name etc/config/actions <archive name="libserver9.a" path="%ORACLE_HOME%/lib" object_name="lib/libserver9.a/ktuc.o"/> $ find $ORACLE_HOME/.patch_storage -name "*.log" -exec grep -il ktuc.o {} \; If the find returns nothing, there is no conflict with any installed patches. If the find returns log files, open each log that was found and check for "Oracle 9iR2 Patchset" version. If the RDBMS version is not 9.2.0.3.0, disregard the conflict. If the RDBMS version is 9.2.0.3.0, open a SR to report the conflict.
