Speaking of browsers, the beta release of Internet Explorer 7 is almost here. This
morning I realized that I don't know whether Java (as we know it) will be reasonably
supported in the next generation browser from Microsoft? Since IE7 is certain to become
very widely adopted, the extent and quality of its support for standard Java could have
serious impact on the success of Javalobby members everywhere. My understanding is
that security (for obvious reasons) is a primary focus of IE7. Lots of liberties have been
taken in the name of security these past few years, however, so it wouldn't surprise me
much to find out that IE7's Java support might need to be constrained for "security"
purposes. There's a blog entry by Rob Franco, Lead Program Manager for IE Security ,
that is intended to clarify what "Low Rights IE" means, but after reading it I am still
confused. It does seem that there will be a difference between IE7 on Windows XP and
the built-in browser on Windows Vista (Longhorn.) After searching around on Google for
a while I am still unsure what level of support to expect. I guess we'll all find out pretty
soon, and I'll keep my fingers crossed that the settlement between Sun and Microsoft
will prevent this from becoming a brand new area of contention.
