I'm working on a collaborative workspace environment that is based on GEF/Eclipse.
The idea is to use the MPEG4 Toolkit to integrate multimedia content. Therefore I need an off-screen rendering feature to fetch a rgb array from an MPEG4 movie that is played in background and then render it to the draw2d GEF content. When I tried to fetch rgb data from PlayerScreenCapture without adding the renderer component to an AWT/Swing container, getScreenCapture() returns null.

Is there a possibility to get such an array without showing the movie on the screen?

Andreas, the bottom line is that it's not possible to do what you want.

The playback part of the toolkit was designed to render to a visible window.
Though it uses double-buffering with an offscreen image it will not be updated
if the window the player is in is hidden. So for what you want to do even
trying something like initially creating it visible and hiding it wouldn't work
since the offscreen image will no longer be updated while it's not visible.
