Well, it looks like with the Final Draft of Java EE 5, the final nail has been placed in JSP's coffin. I suggest anyone using JSP and not drinking the JSF kool aid get out now while there is still time. Alternatives that don't require compiling, are cross platform, and can be modified easily at runtime do exist.

That's what Patrick Lightbody has to say after receiving an email from the JCP about the next version of the Servlet, JSP, and JSF specifications.

Yup -- what some of us feared is now totally certain: JSP is now locked to JSF with no hope of ever improving as a standalone spec. And worse, the Java EE web platform is now bound to a dreadfully immature platform.

The problem is that this isn't completely true. In the various comments to his initial entry, many people were quick to point out that the closer interaction between the various JSRs was actually aimed at making JSF work better with JSP and JSTL. For example, in the first version of the JSFT spec, it barely worked at all with JSP. In addition, the EL format in JSF was different from what was in JSP.

So the question is: are we all going to have to write in JSF soon? Will the ability to write in plain JSPs on a lightweight server such as Jetty, Tomcat, or Resin disappear? What do you guys think? Is this a good thing or is everyone overreacting?
