2 General and History
With this version, the TECDOC-CD DDE interface was switched to the standard DDE method. Also, the data
table format was largely extended to prepare for future interface extensions and to receive new information. The
set lengths of the data tables were given up in favour of variable length. To be compatible with future versions,
the client should not carry out a lengths check whilst reading in these tables.
For these reasons, old client-implementations are not compatible with the new interface and need to be adapted.

This document describes the DDE-interface of the TECDOC-CD and addresses mainly software developers,
who wish to develop a DDE client.

4 BROAD VIEW OVER THE DDE – INTERFACE OF THE
TECDOC-CD
The DDE-interface of the TECDOC-CD enables the communication with other applications. On the
one hand, it enables programs to make a specific selection of vehicles or generic articles on the
TECDOC-CD by sending specific commands to this interface, and on the other hand, article numbers,
which are selected on the TECDOC-CD, can be sent to other programs.
In the DDE – terminology, the TECDOC-CD is in this case the server and the other programs is the
client.
4.1 THE USER SURFACE
4.1.1 Possible commands of the client to the TECDOC-CD
The following commands can be sent via DDE to the TECDOC-CD:
• The selection of a vehicle with KTypNr; KTypNr being the TECDOC- specific vehicle number of
the vehicle.
• The selection of a vehicle with KBANr; KBANr being the vehicle number of the
Kraftfahrtbundesamt.
• The selection of a generic article with GenArtNr (see SA320) (from 2/2001)
• Reset of the vehicle selection window.
• Reset of the search tree window (from 2/2001)
• Transfer of the name of the application, which represents the Client. This name is shown in the
TECDOC-CD on the send-data-button “Send to [name of application]”.
• Activation of the TECDOC-CD (bring to the foreground).
• Control of the display of the send-buttons (from 2/2001)
• Query of interface version (from 4/2002)
• Erasing of shopping basket (from 4/2002)
4.1.2 The changed surface of the TECDOC-CD during an existing DDE- connection
The menu of the TECDOC-CD lists a menu item DDE, which contains the menu points “send
shopping basket” and “send selection”.
As soon as a DDE- connection is made and the user is on the shopping basket screen, the menu point
“send shopping basket” can be chosen. The menu point “send selection” is possible as soon a vehicle
has been selected; optionally, a generic article can be chosen and sent.
4.1.3 The sending of data from the TECDOC-CD to the Client
If on the TECDOC-CD a vehicle (optionally also a generic article) has been selected and therefore is
contained in the history, it can be sent to the Client via the DDE interface. The sending is triggered by
chosing the menu point “send selection” or by pressing the applicable buttons from the toolbar. The
same is applicable for the sending of the contents of the shopping basket.

4.2 THE DEVELOPER VIEW
4.2.1 The syntax of the commands to the TECDOC-CD
A command is sent to the TECDOC-CD in form of a string.
There are a total of 6 commands, which select something on the TECDOC-CD:
1. [KTYPNR]
Reset of the vehicle selection window.
2. [KTYPNR(KTypNr)]:
KTypNr is numeric.
Selection of a vehicle with the number KTypNr. Should the KTypNr be applicable to several
vehicles (a PC and a CV), an additional user selection is carried out on the CD.
3. [KBANR]:
Reset of the vehicle selection window.
4. [KBANR(KBANr)]
KBANr is alpha-numeric.
Selection of a vehicle with the number KBANr. Should the KBANr be applicable to several
TECDOC- vehicles, an additional user selection is carried out on the CD.
5. [APPNAME("Name")]
Name is a string.
Text, which is lodged in the toolbar and in the menu as tool tip.
6. [GENART]
Reset of assembly group selection window (from 2/2001)
7. [GENART(GenArtNr)]
GenArtNr is numeric.
Selection of a generic article (from 2/2001)
8. [HIDEBUTTONS]
Deactivates the send-menu items and the send-button (from 2/2001)
9. [SHOWBUTTONS]
Reactivates the send menu items and the send button, after they have been hidden with
[HIDEBUTTONS] (from 2/2001).
10. [SETMODE(mode)] (from 2/2001)
mode is numeric and can only have the values 0 and 1.
mode = 0 => The tables 1201 and 1211 are not transferred (default setting)
mode = 1 => The tables 1201 and 1211 are transferred
11. [VERSION] (from 4/2002)
Triggers the sending of a block with the version number of the interface.

12. [EMPTYBASKET] (from 4/2002)
Triggers the erasing of the shopping basket of the TECDOC-CD. Caution: This command has to
stand alone!
On receiving these commands, they are stored in sequence by the TECDOC – CD in a command list,
but not yet executed.
Only the command
„[ACTIVATE]“
triggers the TECDOC-CD to execute all previously sent commands; the command, which was
received first will be executed first. The command list will then be erased. If the ACTIVATEcommand
is sent with an empty command list, the TECDOC-CD will only get the focus. The
commands do not need to be sent separately, but can be combined into a single string, like for
example:
„[KTYPNR(610)][GENART(1)][ACTIVATE]“
„[KBANR(123456)][GENART(1)][ACTIVATE]“
The commands need to be listed directly behind one another: there must not be a character between a
„]“ and a „[“ .
If the transfer of the tables 1201 and 1211 is requested, the following command string should be sent
directly after a successful initialisation:
„[SETMODE(1)][ACTIVATE]“.
The activate command should absolutely be listed at the end of the command string. An exception is
the command „EMPTYBASKET“, which is sent separately, i.e. without „ACTIVATE“ and without
further commands.
4.2.2 The form of the data sent by the TECDOC-CD
The Client received the data sent by the TECDOC-CD in form of an ASCII - string. It contains one or
several lines (named here as tables), which are separated through the line end ( CRLF = x0D0A ) .
The tables are sent in the following sequence:

5 Triggering of the TECDOC-CD
5.1 Establishing the connection
The TECDOC-CD offers a DDE interfact to other programs; the TECDOC-CD being the server, which is started
at the start of the application.
With the command DdeInitialize, a client application can register at the Dynamic Data Exchange Management
Library. The establishing of the connection is then initiated with the command DdeConnect. The following
values are used as parameters:
ApplicationName=“TCD“ (service name)
Topic=“Parts“ (topic name)
Context data = null
Should the CD not start, the connection command fails. In this case, the client has to start the TECDOC-CD,
which is possible through the read out of the registry (see 3.3 important registration entries). The triggering with
DDE is only possible after the complete start of the CD.
5.2 Sending of commands to the TECDOC-CD
After the establishing of the connection, the client can send commands (see 4.2 THE DEVELOPER
VIEW) to the TECDOC-CD via the function DdeClientTransaction. The transaction type must be
XTYP_EXECUTE. In high level languages, this function is usually encapsulated as DdeExecute or
similar.
5.3 Sending of data to the client
To enable the TECDOC-CD to send data to the DDE-client, a hotlink can be set up (Hot Advice Loop). Via this
hotlink, the TECDOC-CD can send for example the content of the shopping basket or the selected vehicle to the
client.
To start the hotlink, the function DdeClientTransaction needs to be called up with the transaction type
XTYP_ADVSTART and the DataItem “PartsSelection“.
The data is sent directly to the client via the hotlink; a query from the client is not necessary. When the
TECDOC-CD sends the data, a DDE-callback function is called up at the client, (with some high level
languages, an event is triggered), which can process the data.
5.4 Ending the connection
The server ends the connection on closing the TECDOC-CD – main window. The client can end the
connection at any point with the function DdeDisconnect.
